Resilience

For my birthday, I decided to take a “solo yolo” trip to one of my favorite places in the world – Big Sur. Didn’t realize in my initial decision to go, but its significance only occurred to me as I drove the 3 hours there amidst sunrise.

As you may know, Big Sur has recently been ravaged by devastating fires. One of the most beautiful places in the world – put to the ultimate test. Countless hours, days, months devoted to putting out these flames.

A forest marred by raging fire. It all feels hopeless.

And suddenly, when you least expect it, a miraculous downpour of rain as we’ve experienced in the past few days cleanses the seemingly insurmountable demons away.

This past year, as with every single year, I’ve learned a lot. This year, I’ve learned to forgive. This year, I’ve learned to fight for what I want. This year, I’ve also learned to love.

Unfortunately, the journey will never be up and up and up. Big Sur will never be the same again. But the amount of green I saw today and the number of trees – despite having indelible burns slashed across every façade – that were still strongly rooted into the forest ground… gave me immense hope.

This coming year, like those trees, I’ll learn to be resilient.

I’ve always loved the quote: “What solace we feel knowing that our best days are yet to come.”

Has Big Sur seen better days?

Absolutely.

Will I see better days?
